Speakers and Facilitators
Opening speakers
Local and international experts
Since 2015, 1st Conference has welcomed speakers such as Alistair Cockburn, Lisette Sutherland, Jurgen Appelo, Joanne Molesky, Ben Linders, Jordana Patterson and Ange Ferguson to our lineup. The lineup of speakers and facilitators is hand picked from our Australian and overseas network of experts.
1st Conference 2020 will be a mix of talks and facilitated discussion group, helping you be inspired, discover new thinking and reinforce your previous experiences.
The Heart of Agile
Australia has a unique relationship with the Heart of Agile. It was conceived by Alistair Cockburn while on an extended visit here in 2015. In 2017, we became the first event outside the United States to be structured around Heart of Agile. In 2020, we continue to structure the event around its pillars of "Collaborate, Deliver, Reflect and Improve".
The design of the conference
In designing 1st Conference, we want to:
Iterate with the format
…we were first event outside the US/in the Southern Hemisphere to be based upon the “Heart of Agile” concept. We continue to use this to structure the event. Each year, we adjust the content and structure of the day to provide value.
Create meaningful Learning Opportunities and deeper understanding
This year, we are having a series of facilitated discussion sessions to promote cross-pollination of ideas around the four Heart of Agile areas; Collaborate, Deliver, Reflect, Improve. Unlike previous years, we are curating the sessions with the HoA organisation and with the facilitators, to be an even closer fit to Heart of Agile. Participants will stay together in groups to discover and explore each of the four ideas, instead of dispersing at the end of a session.
Support diversity.
We as organisers, support diversity in conferences and we commit to enhance the diversity of speakers and workshop facilitators. In 2017, the majority of presenters and facilitators were female. As well as gender diversity, we want to keep reflecting the community that we serve and be diverse and inclusive. You can find our Code of Conduct, here.

The organisers of 1st Conference acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which the events are held, the Wurundjeri and the Kaurna people, and their Elders past and present. We are honoured to recognise the connection to indigenous Country, history, culture and spirituality, and respect the Elders and Ancestors of these lands and that their cultural and heritage beliefs are still as important to the people today.
